Who were Lunn Poly

Lunn Poly - Now Thomson
Lunn Poly were one of the UK's leading travel agents, with around 800 Holiday Shops throughout the UK and employing around 6,000 people. But, after more than a century, High Street travel agency Lunn Poly is losing its name. As part of a restructuring drive their German parent company TUI, the Lunn Poly name has gone and they are being rebranded into TUI's Thomson unit.

The move follows TUI's recent decision to ditch its Britannia Airways brand in favour of Thomsonfly.

The origin of the Lun Poly name actually dates back to 1888, when Poly Tours was created to offer cheap holidays abroad for students at London's Regent Street Polytechnic. Five years later a rival travel company was founded by Sir Henry Lunn. The Poly and Lunn groups finally merged in 1965 before being bought by Hannover-based TUI, one of Germany's 40 largest stock market firms.

Until December 2004 before the rebrand Lunn Poly were one of the UK's leading travel agents, with around 800 Holiday Shops throughout the UK and employing around 6,000 people, these are now called thomson and the same deals that are available instore are now found on the internet.

Lunn Poly was famous for a long-running advertising campaign on television. These commercials featured people looking into what holidays the company offered. Another person would then say to them "Lunn Poly? Get away", at which point the person would disappeared into thin air and end up at a vacation spot.
